THIS POSITION WILL BE ON-SITE AT MT. SINAI HOSPITAL IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

Xtend Healthcare is looking for a Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist.  The position is responsible for performing various entry-level technical functions within the Health information Management Department.  Tasks include medical record analysis, tracking deficiencies and follow up for chart completion, birth and death certificate processing/completion, Master Patient Index (MPI) integrity maintenance, and medical record processing to include, but not limited to, release of information, prepping, scanning, indexing and quality control of medical record documents, retrieval and filing of records, and other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:

1.  Performs HIM Technician work as assigned as their major responsibilities: 

  • Medical record analysis and chart completion
  • Tracking deficiencies and completion of provider documentation
  • Birth certificate processing
  • Death certificate processing
  • MPI integrity maintenance
  • Prepping/Scanning/Indexing/Quality Control
  • Release of Information
  • Other duties, as assigned

2.  Provides coverage for HIM department as needed.                            

  • Medical record analysis and chart completion
  • Tracking deficiencies and completion of provider documentation
  • Birth certificate processing
  • Death certificate processing
  • MPI integrity maintenance
  • Prepping/Scanning/Indexing/Quality Control
  • Release of Information
  • Other duties, as assigned

3.  Performs customer service activities.     

  • Assist physicians with medical record completion and coding.
  • Interact with patients in person or over the phone assisting with medical record requests.
  • Follow up with physician/physician office, business office, hospital departments and external agencies phone calls and inquiries.

4. Record Keeping    

  • Maintain daily productivity reports and submit timely

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma
  • One – two (1-2) years’ experience in an office and/or healthcare setting. (additional equivalent education above the required minimum may substitute for the required level of experience)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Understanding of health information concepts
  • 2-3 years of progressive experience in a hospital setting
  • Electronic health record (EHR) experience
  • RHIT and/or RHIA credential is a plus
  • Ability to perform basic computer functions
  • Ability to perform basic data entry in Microsoft Word and excel is a plus
  • Frequent bending may be required for some duties
  • Frequent sitting and standing
  • Continuous oral communication and clear speech required
  • Continuous repetitive finger movement (data entry)
  • Frequent lifting charts, office supplies such as ream of paper
  • The ability to work independently and interact professionally with public, physicians and hospital personnel.
  • The abilities for critical thinking skills to identify and locate information in various mediums and locations, knowledge of medical record forms and documentation requirements, understanding of patient information and process flow, ability to problem solve.
  • Be detail oriented, self-starter and team player.
  • The ability to read, understand and reiterate regulatory requirements, hospital medical staff rules and regulations.
  • The ability to respond correctly to a multitude of information requests
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be flexible.
