The Business Systems Architect is accountable for implementing and supporting the principles and processes that comprise Navient’s standard business analyst methodology.    Key functions of the role will include responsibilities and accountability of requirements elicitation, analysis, specification, and validation phases typically within a business area or moderately complex project.  Interpreting the needs and requirements of the business and working with various areas to understand and develop requirements and analysis deliverables to support the projects selected systems development lifecycle or maintenance processes.  Works with both technical and business teams to translate needs and requirements.  Leads multiple teams in business design analysis for a larger more complex project. 

The Business System Architect is actively involved and engaged in developing application architecture, has a working understanding of their respective business processes and needs, and can interpret those business processes and needs into documented business processes.  The Business System Architect works horizontally across IT and business organizations to develop a complete perspective of the customer facing issues.  Extent of knowledge may span one or more business lines such as Marketing, Originations, Collections, Servicing and Corporate Finance.  From this understanding, the Business System Architect is responsible for interpreting business needs into detailed requirements that can be easily understood by their development teams.  Analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to identify needs and take initiative are key requirements of the position.

Essential Job Functions:

Business System Analysis

  • Development and documenting of large business system design and functional specifications in the form of user stories.
  • Analyze business user needs to develop solutions, with the overall goal of improving business processes, efficiency and end-user self-sufficiency.
  • Creating and maintaining conceptual systems design documentation, test scripts, release plans, problem and change process flow and issue resolution logs. 
  • Gather, compile and synthesize information with regards to business processes or systems.
  • Recreate and document system software deficiencies through the testing process and daily interaction with the end-users.  Recommend solutions for deficiencies.

Developer and Test Support

  • Develop non-functional user stories to support security, compliance, supportability and operations needs
  • Manage Defect escalation and mitigation strategies
  • Provide guidance on what should be tested by providing key scenarios
  • Supports Development resources by answering questions, performing additional analysis on complex processes

Leadership Throughout Business Process Lifecycle and Application Development

  • Oversees large projects through all lifecycle phases 
  • Coordinating communication and handoffs between phases   
  • Responsible for inter-team communication and coordination with multiple IT partners.
  • Provides ideas and process improvement based on experience and observation
  • Drive the full life cycle development process for mid-range and large projects.
  • Define the appropriate architecture, technical requirements and implementation strategies necessary to meet business and application needs of the organization.

Business Modeling, Application Architecture

  • Translates business needs into detailed requirements, user stories, business models and design.
  • Identifies actors and stakeholders, discover and document their needs.
  • Works closely with solution architects and key business areas to ensure business and technical requirements are defined, documented, tested and delivered as specified.
  • Understands and provides direction based on global understanding and company goals

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Technology or a related field OR additional equivalent experience above the required minimum.
  • A minimum of 10 years progressive experience working in Application Development or additional equivalent education above the required minimum.
  • Experience working with Agile teams
  • Experience writing user stories for functional and non-functional requirements
  • Proven project leadership skills and experience with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process,
  • Must have business experience, understand business drivers and be able to translate business needs into workable project plans.
  • Exceptional organizational skills. The ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and people while ensuring strategic focus is maintained in order to accomplish department goals and business objectives.
  • High levels of presentation and interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of people including IT technical analysts and architects, IT Managers/Directors, business unit management, and senior executives.
  • A highly motivated self-starter. Ability and willingness to work flexibly, under pressure and able to meet deadlines without prompting. 
  • A team player who understands how to build consensus and who has the ability to motivate others, and ensure assigned tasks and deliverables are being accomplished, reported and completed.
  • Ability to produce high quality results in a dynamic work environment that involves numerous system and business process changes, new service/product development, regulatory changes, and volume fluctuations.
  • High degree of initiative and flexibility.  Must personally be able to set a great example and embrace and quickly adapt to change.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.  Must be able to identify the root causes to problems and develop solutions to eliminate re-occurrence. 
  • Excellent decision-making skills.  Must be able to make good business decisions using factual and sometimes limited data. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Project Management experience
  • Experience with Clarity PPM tool Clarity
  • Experience assessing and documenting business processes and requirements.
  • IIBA CBAP certification
