A senior staff member on the Information Security team responsible for evaluating, developing, and implementing enterprise-wide technologies, programs, policies and strategies to protect corporate information assets.  The Information Security Architect provides a blend of technical expertise, staff leadership, and project management skills to help ensure the success of the department. 

Information Security Technical Architects work with other Enterprise Architects to develop and integrate new technologies into the Navient environment, ensuring that security technologies are properly implemented and that non-security technologies meet all applicable security requirements. They are responsible for conducting in depth security risk assessments for new and existing systems, applications and programs to help identify weaknesses or security exposures and to design solutions for remediation or mitigation of these issues. The ability to understand the business and to develop risk-based solutions that balance business needs with security and compliance requirements is critical.

The Information Security Technical Architect also leads project teams, develops comprehensive project plans and participates on critical Information Technology planning initiatives to ensure adequate security protection measures are incorporated into IT strategic plans. Thorough documentation and presentation skills, analytical and critical thinking skills, and the ability to identify needs and take initiative are key requirements of the position.

The ability to cross over into Application Security is a plus, including professional coding experience, experience with web application firewalls, and/or designing and implementing DevSecOps infrastructure.

Responsibilities include:

Security Assessments, Risk Evaluations and Compliance Support

  • Complete security product assessments and evaluations, make recommendations and coordinate product implementations.
  • Develop security acceptance test plans.
  • Conduct audits, risk assessments and reviews of third-party service providers, subsidiaries and partners who wish to connect to the corporate network.

Security Architecture and Strategic Planning

  • Assists the Director in defining the appropriate architecture, technical requirements and strategies necessary to address information security needs for the organization.
  • Formulates proposals and develops technical requirements for new products, services and technologies.
  • Conducts research, monitors new product developments and makes recommendations regarding technologies which have the potential to benefit Information Security.
  • Provide direction and guidance to staff, consultants, vendors and support personnel for implementing new information security controls and technologies.
  • Establishes project priorities and coordinates the implementation of deliverables.

Information Security Policy Management 

  • Assist in developing corporate wide Information Security policies, programs and standards to improve the overall security and protection of information assets.
  • Liaison with Legal, Human Resources, Risk Management and Internal Audit to ensure Information Security programs are in alignment with corporate strategies, regulatory requirements and legal guidelines.
  • Monitor and report on new legislation, rules or law that pertains to information security, privacy or NPI related issues.

Leadership/Mentor

  • Provide informal leadership to junior staff in other Information Security teams.
  • Potential to directly supervise an intern.

Other

  • Assess and quickly resolve technical security problems related to areas of assigned responsibility while understanding the risk and exposure to the business.
  • Provide direction, consultation, and training for information security staff and emergency after hours support as required in support of business initiatives.
  • Assist in developing training and security awareness programs.
  • Engage with external security groups and information security professionals of other local businesses, industry groups and other organizations.
  • Travel to remote offices and affiliates to support all Navient operations as needed.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree Computer Science (Additional experience may substitute).
  • 8+ years of progressive experience working in Information Technology with at least 4 years of direct, hands on experience in systems security management, security administration, systems audit, or security compliance. Internships and school-related experience can be applied to this requirement.
  • A minimum of 1 year of team lead experience, developing and mentoring staff.
  • A minimum of 2 years of managing projects including developing and tracking detailed project plans in support of assigned projects and providing project team leadership.
  • Must understand information security concepts, protocols, industry best practices, and strategies.
  • Experience with industry regulatory requirements and working with internal and external audit staff is required.
  • Must have business experience, understand business drivers, and be able to translate business needs into workable project plans.
  • Additional education may substitute for above experience listed.
  • This position will support a federal government contract. Applicants must be able to obtain Public Trust security clearance as required of federal government contractors to include a background check conducted by the U.S. Government to determine eligibility and suitability for federal contract employment for public trust or sensitive positions. For this level of clearance, applicants must possess U.S. citizenship.

  • Leadership and analytical skills are critical.  Must be focused, energetic, meet commitments, be willing to take ownership, have excellent judgment and integrity.
  • Strong technical skills related to both security and general IT infrastructure and processes.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills. The ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and people while ensuring strategic focus is maintained to accomplish department goals and business objectives
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with project and application development teams, management, and clients is a must.
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of people including IT technical analysts and architects, IT Managers/Directors, business unit management, and senior executives.
  • A highly motivated self-starter. Ability and willingness to work flexibly, under pressure and able to meet deadlines without prompting. 
  • A team player who understands how to build consensus and who can motivate and manage others, and ensure assigned tasks and deliverables are being accomplished, reported, and completed.
