THIS POSITION IS LOCATED ON-SITE AT SINAI HOSPITAL, CHICAGO, IL.

The Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist is responsible for performing various technical functions including medical record review, analysis, transcription processing, birth and death certificate processing/completion, record completion, Mater Patient Index (MPI) integrity maintenance, medical record processing to include, but not limited to release of information, prep records and scanning/indexing, Quality Assurance (QA) for scanning, retrieval and filing of records, and other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:

1.  Performs HIM Technician work as assigned as their major responsibilities:                       

            Check appropriate functions/duties:

            a. Medical record review/performance improvement

            b. Medical record analysis

            c. Transcription processing

            d. Birth certificate processing

            e. Death certificate processing

            f. Record completion duties

            g. MPI integrity maintenance

            h. Prep/Scanning/Indexing/QA

            i.  Release of Information

            Other duties, as assigned

2.  Provides coverage for HIM department as needed.                                                                

            Check appropriate functions/duties:

            a. Medical record review/performance improvement

            b. Medical record analysis

            c. Transcription processing

            d. Birth certificate processing

            e.  Death certificate processing

            f.  Record completion duties

            g. MPI integrity maintenance

             h. Prep/Scanning/Indexing/QA

              i.  Release of Information

              j.  Other duties, as assigned

3.  Performs customer service activities:                                                                                    

            a. Answering telephones

            b. Follow up with physician/physician office calls

            c.  Follow up with business office calls

            d.  Follow up with other department calls

4.  Record Keeping

            a.  Maintain daily productivity reports and submit timely

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma
  • 2-3 years of progressive experience in a hospital setting
  • Electronic health record (EHR) experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Understanding of health information concepts
  • Ability to perform basic computer functions
  • Ability to perform basic data entry in Microsoft Word and excel is a plus
  • RHIT and/or RHIA credential is a plus
  • Frequent bending may be required for some duties
  • Frequent sitting and standing
  • Continuous oral communication and clear speech required
  • Continuous repetitive finger movement (data entry)
  • Frequent lifting charts, office supplies such as ream of paper
  • The ability to work independently and interact professionally with public, physicians and hospital personnel.
  • The abilities for critical thinking skills to identify and locate information in various mediums and locations, knowledge of medical record forms and documentation requirements, understanding of patient information and process flow, ability to problem solve.
  • The ability to read, understand and reiterate regulatory requirements, hospital medical staff rules and regulations.
  • The ability to respond correctly to a multitude of information requests
